PRODUCTION
Production and post-production cover such areas as adjustments to tonal balance, recording to and back from mastering tape for vintage warmth, and subtle compression and limiting. For solo piano recording, compression may be deemed unnecessary and anything more than the subtlest shaping risks an unnatural sounding recording. Available tools are:
• Firium and Equium professional digital equalisation software run within Cubase.
• Avalon VT 747 signal processor featuring valve signal path for added warmth, transparent optical compression and class A 6-band mastering equaliser. Each stage of this program may be switched in or out as required.
• TC Electronic Finaliser – industry standard stereo mastering processor, featuring EQ, expander, compressor, limiter.
Care is always taken to produce natural and rounded finished recordings.
Those wishing to achieve a vintage piano recording quality may be interested in the use of the Revox PR 99 Mk 3 quarter-inch mastering tape recorder. Used for initial sound capture, it is possible to achieve subtle tape compression, tonal depth.
